Placeholder story, for Lukas to rewrite in his own words:
Most trackers are libraries: lists of things you’ve watched. Airing is built around time. It tells you when the next episode lands in your local time, and what you can actually watch tonight in your country.
It started as a desktop Electron prototype. That proved two things: TMDB is the catalogue, and TVmaze has the exact broadcast times TMDB lacks. Then it was rebuilt from scratch as a mobile app.
Decisions
- Schedule-first, not library-first. The home screen opens on “Tonight in
”: new episodes that stream where you are, locally made shows first, mixed with what’s in cinemas. - Android from day one. The closest competitor is iOS-only. Expo gets both from one codebase.
- Two sources, joined. TMDB for details, images and where to stream; TVmaze for exact air times, linked through IMDb ids, with TMDB’s date as the fallback.
- Your clock, not ours. 12- or 24-hour follows the phone by default, because people in the same country differ.
- Fewer tabs. The app went down to three: Discover, Calendar, Library. “Up Next” was cut because it duplicated two other screens.
- Shared links are fast. Share pages sit behind a Cloudflare Worker cache in front of the Convex backend.
